'Supernatural' | 'Ladies Drink Free' S12E16 Overview
'Supernatural' is back! With a lone werewolf in the woods, the British Men of Letters want in on the hunt.
SPOILER ALERT!
A young man, Ben (Jordan Burtchett), has been killed in the woods, his heart ripped out, and his sister, Hayden (Abby Ross) is in the hospital with scratches and bites. While the British Men of Letters believe a werewolf is responsible and send the Winchesters in to deal with it, Mick Davies (Adam Fergus) invites himself along for the hunt.
While Dean and Mick discover that someone has beat them to interviewing the staff at the bar the victim was seen drinking at - a blonde teenager with attitude.
It’s Claire Novak (Kathryn Love Newton), the daughter of Castiel’s vessel, Jimmy, and she’s hunting solo without the knowledge of her adopted mother, Jody Mills (played by Kim Rhodes, who doesn’t appear in this episode).
Claire is in a difficult place in her life, where she wants to flex her independence, but knows that Jody will be hurt if she finds out that she’s been hunting solo. Poor Sam tries to get her to do the right thing - to tell Jody what she’s really been up to, but receives a tongue-lashing instead. Luckily for Claire, she has some protective uncles around to look after her when the monsters are biting.
Castiel is conspicuously absent from this episode. Sure, he’s currently in heaven doing who-knows-what with the angels, but they might have at least tried to call him when they knew Claire was involved in the case. No-one mentioned him! Meanwhile, Dean does a fine job of acting as Claire’s surrogate dad.
While at times it feels like this episode is lapsing back into a lacklustre monster-of-the-week formula, it’s still an important episode for the British Men of Letters (BMoL), and particularly for the development of Mick Davies.
Mick is learning how the American hunters approach their work, while learning that not all monsters are monstrous. It has taken many years for Sam and Dean to learn compassion for werewolves and vampires that don’t want to harm humans, but the BMoL code maintains a hard line against all monsters.
Mick and Dean’s animosity towards one another is evident from the start, but hunting together creates an element of respect and understanding between them. Will he end up becoming an ally against the BMoL’s ruthless plans?
There’s also a much more pressing question to be answered: Why is Mick the exception to the rule when it comes to all British characters having ridiculously posh accents? Is it because he’s the only one willing to put on a flannel and get dirty with the hunters?
This episode is also suffering from a similar problem to that of other episodes in this season: weak individual stories, but with significant lore moments that lead to lasting consequences. The monster of the week was a lone werewolf that decided to turn Claire rather than kill them. The cure itself was bland and obvious, and if it was so easy to prepare, why did it all go so wrong during the testing? But the fact that the hunters now have a viable werewolf cure available to them makes a big difference to the BMoL’s plans of eradication across the US.
Episode 17 will see the return of Kelly Kline and Lucifer to the story as well as Mick, so it will be interesting to see what the Men of Letters make of the Nephilim. As Dean said Mick, “Things aren’t just black and white out here.”
Also, does anyone else really want to see a spin-off with the 'Supernatural' version of Hogwarts, Kendricks?
‘Supernatural’ airs on the CW at 8pm EST Thursdays, & on Eleven at 9:30pm Mondays in Australia.
