SNEAK PEAK | 'Doctor Who' Returns!

In one week, The Doctor will return to our screens in 'The Pilot' with his new companion Bill in tow. Following the events of last season, let's take a look at what's in store for the Time Lord in Season 10.

It’s been a while since we last heard the vworp-vworp of the TARDIS. The 2016 Christmas special, 'The Return of Doctor Mysterio', was the first time we’d seen the blue box on our screens since the previous Christmas. With the show’s creators taking a whole year to work on other projects (such as the 'Doctor Who' spinoff, 'Class', which received mediocre ratings), we can only hope Moffat and crew are returning with new and wonderful ideas for the iconic show's tenth season. What a ride this series promises to be!

Season 10 sees the introduction of new companion, Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie) joining the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Nardole (Matt Lucas) on their travels through time and space.

So what do we know about new companion Bill Potts so far?

She’s from London, is openly gay and a complete sci-fi geek.

Recently, there were rumours that Mackie would be leaving the show at the end of Season 10 to allow a clean slate for the new showrunner and Doctor, but the BBC has downplayed those rumours, quoted as saying “no casting choices for Series 11 have yet been made”.

With the thirteenth Doctor still undecided, bets are on as to which actor - or actress - will replace Capaldi as the enigmatic Time Lord. At this stage, no hints have been made as to the casting for the thirteenth Doctor, but there is already plenty of speculation.

With The Master appearing in the last few seasons as “Missy” (Michelle Gomez), there is a strong feeling that the Doctor could gender-swap during regeneration.

Olivia Coleman ('Broadchurch', and a previous appearance on 'Doctor Who') is a hot favourite, as is Hayley Atwell ('Agent Carter'), but there are also numerous others - both male and female - in the running, so we’ll just have to wait and see. No dates have been set for a revelation just yet.

Some of our favourite baddies are returning, including the Daleks (naturally), the Martian Ice Warriors, and the especially ancient Mondasian Cybermen. But we’ll also see some new monsters: mysterious creatures described only as 'The Monks', a monster in the Thames, and emoji-bots - creatures Moffat described in a Radio Times interview as “...small, cute and communicate by emojis and turn you into skeletons.”

Guest stars for this season include David Suchet ('Poirot'), Stephanie Hyam, Mina Anwar, Ralf Little, and Kaizer Akhta. Joining the long list of guest stars is Fady Elsayed, who starred in 'Class'.

Gomez will return as Missy, while in a surprise revelation from the BBC last week that many believed to be an April Fool's joke, John Simm will reprise his role as The Master. Simm was last seen in the Season 6 finale, back in 2010.

What kind of mischief could two incarnations of The Master get up to together? The mind boggles.

Season 10 will be the last for Capaldi, who is bowing out of the cult sci-fi show after three series.

Long-standing Head Writer and Executive Producer Steven Moffat will also leave the show at the end of this season, handing over to Chris Chibnall for Season 11.

Chibnall has written several 'Doctor Who' episodes over the years, but is best known for his award-winning ITV show, 'Broadchurch'.

There are set to be twelve episodes in this next season, which will take us to the end of July 2017, with one episode airing per week.

Episodes 3, 4 and 5 will be a rarely-seen three-parter, with three writers working separately on each part.

Episodes 11 and 12 will air as a two-part series finale. Capaldi’s final episode is set to be the Christmas special for this year.

Safe to say there are huge changes happening in the BBC right now, but in the meantime, there are plenty more adventures to come!

'Doctor Who' returns to the BBC on 15th April; ABC TV and iView in Australia on 16th April.

'The Pilot' is also showing in selected cinemas around the world. Check your local cinema for times and dates for more information.
