'SHADOWHUNTERS' Mid-Season Finale (Part 2) | 'Erchomai'

Episode 10 / Part 2 titled 'Erchomai' (translates to ‘I am coming’) of the Season 3 mid-season finale immediately left viewers expecting much action, tears, a distinct lack of closure, and one hell of a cliff-hanger ending.

(Catch up on Part 1 HERE.)

After Clary completed all that work for the Clave, yet still hands herself over as prisoner, she is captured by Jace, who then leads her through New York to Lilith’s lair/hotel where she knows her brother’s resurrection is impending. She also knows that her heart is needed for the ceremony but has no idea what that actually entails.

Simon is dealing with the repercussions of Heidi’s plan now that his sister is in hospital getting a blood transfusion and his mother is trying to convince the police that her vampire son did it. Simon talks to his sister Becky, who tells him she still loves him, and is sorry she wasn’t there for him before. Together they decide that the best option for their mum is to use the vampire trance and convince her Simon didn’t attack Becky - because Simon is dead. It is a hard scene to watch without crying (we challenge you).

After Magnus’ failed attempt to have Lorenzo Rey help him save Jace, he is left no choice but to go to Edom to ask for help from his demon king father, Asmodeus (Jack Yang). After having the most touching moment with Alec so far this season – a desperate kiss and promise to come back – he painfully transports himself to the glowing red realm of Edom. His face, when he sees his father, is priceless and what his father asks of him in return for some extra power is equally as priceless.

The final showdown to defeat Lilith, stop Johnathan’s resurrection and save Jace is intense and glorious. Clary and Simon working together surely warmed viewers' hearts, and the way Lilith was defeated was clever and acceptably realistic; but much attention goes to the fight between Jace and Alec, as we are forced to watch Alec ironically pierced in the chest with his own arrow.

Despite the many events that occurred throughout this episode, the award for 'Best Character' must go to Simon’s sister, Becky. Honestly, sister goals. Identifying that he is not a monster despite the horrific night that happened to her by someone of Simon’s kind, she loves her brother too much to let such a horrific mishap stand in her way. Becky's ability to think ahead and support Simon with his mother is heartwarming; one hopes she will be around a lot more in the second half of this season.

Clary also managed to prove that strength comes in all forms, managing to stay strong, calm, defiant and smart while captured by Jace, as well as in the face of Lilith. She did not stay quiet, choosing to use the knowledge she earned through missteps to build a calculated plan, and not hesitating to enact it; this is one of the many reasons Clary is growing into an outstanding female Shadowhunter, and lead character in the world of Netflix.

Speaking of ruthless characters: Asmodeus. The way Yang controls his character is fun and yet incredibly dark. It’s hard to nail a demon king of hell’s charms, yet Yang seems to achieve this, together with his fine-line temper. One must also appreciate the cane representation. However, this encounter did feel less significant than other moments throughout the episode, seeming like more of an introduction and set-up for future plots than anything else.

Finally, Magnus hints that something catastrophic has happened to him in Edom. Once Magnus returns to New York and frees Jace, he is faced with Alec’s life-threatening wounds and Jace’s desperate pleas for Magnus to save him... but Magnus can’t, because he no longer possesses magic. This is a huge revelation that is difficult to believe or comprehend, especially when we see the writers willing to take away Maryse’ Shadowhunter powers, too. Seeing Magnus remain as a character without magic, and making everyone realise he is strong and lovable without it is a truly exciting notion, making the wait to find out more even harder.

This, and the major cliff-hanger at the end of the episode were ruthless additions - especially since there is no official air date yet announced for Episode 11. We predict it will be in the American Fall, but that is at least a three-month wait for fans, and frankly, we'll be waiting on the edge of our seats until then.

'Shadowhunters' is streaming now on Netflix.
