'PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING' impresses with an outstanding cast and quality CGI
Jake Pentecost is a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity's victory against the monstrous Kaiju. However, he has since abandoned his training and become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through cities and bring the world to its knees, Jake is given one last chance by his estranged sister, Mako Mori, to live up to his father's legacy.
'Pacific Rim: Uprising' is an action-packed film with a decent storyline and some unexpected plot twists for fans to relish. It is an entertaining film that, like most sequels, leaves room for improvement, but also room for a third 'Pacific Rim' film.
Though clearly missing the 'magic touch' of Guillermo Del Toro, 'Uprising' features a strong cast that upholds the film well. The chemistry between John Boyega and Scott Eastwood make this film easy to watch, with well-delivered humour throughout, while Cailee Spaeny gives a top performance, alongside returning characters from the first film, 'Pacific Rim' (2013).
The CGI is consistently good - somewhat improved upon since the 2013 instalment. Come the third act as the expected huge fight takes place, it is great for viewers to be able to see more detail onscreen due to the fact that the fight takes place during the day. In comparison, the 2013 film battle occurs at night or in dark spaces, which makes its difficult for the human eye to interpret. To see every detail on the Kaiju is simply outstanding and has been well-received by fans.
Jaeger has received some serious upgrades in this film, which looks awesome and makes the movement of the jaeger smoother and more impressive. Nearly all jaegers look different to those in the first film, but one in particular - Gipsy Avenger, appears similar to that of Gipsy Danger.
Beside the new Kaiju and jaeger, we enjoyed some new hybrids: half jaeger and half Kaiju, which were interesting. The best? Obsidian Fury, which seems to be a personal favourite among fans, with its full-back colour body, orange eyes and two swords. One criticism? It would have been nice to see Obsidian Fury in the third act.
We may need to wait a few years for a third instalment, seeing as it took five years for 'Uprising' to take place. Let's hope the series only goes from strength to strength.
