MUST-READ BOOK | 'Throne of Glass' by Sarah J. Maas
Sarah J. Maas’ young adult fantasy novel 'Throne of Glass' is compelling in its diversion from the typical archetype of a strong male lead, instead opting for a female protagonist.
Maas’ incorporation of magic is a successful trope, drawing its reader in to its 'murder mystery' type structure. 'Throne of Glass' engages its reader with an original plot, and delivers excitement through brilliant characterisation.
Celaena Sardothien - once Adarlan’s Assassin, is infamous and deadly. Upon being betrayed, she is captured, imprisoned and enslaved in Endovier - a death camp and salt mine - serving her sentence for a year until the Crown Prince Dorian arrives, offering her a deal she cannot refuse.
Celaena agrees to be his Champion, which entails facing off against dozens of other contestants, putting her abilities to the test in order to gain the title of King’s Champion and more importantly, her freedom. However, something dark is lurking in the castle and killing off competitors. Celaena must find it and put an end to it before it finds her.
Protagonist Celaena Sardothien is witty and mischievous (if not also endearingly arrogant), adding a touch of humour to the ominous, dark plot. Her easy-going attitude establishes a relatable bond between reader and character, adding to the compelling and believable nature of the novel.
Readers will find Celaena's strength of character especially endearing upon observing her ability to survive in a world where men clearly dominate; and at her young age, this makes her rather exceptional. Celaena's enigmatic characterisation conveys the mystery of her past, encouraging the reader’s curiosity.
The fact that the romances between Celaena and Dorian, and Celaena and Chaol are not the main focus is refreshing, highlighting Celaena as a worthy protagonist in her own right, and relenting the reader to the unfolding events within the novel.
Mystery and fantasy, together with an amalgamation of action and drama make for a thrilling read leaving the reader wanting more. Not only does Maas provide detailed descriptions to immerse the reader into the 'Throne of Glass' world, but so too does she impress with a comprehensive historical background, comparative to the likes of other fantasy phenomenons such as 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'Harry Potter'.
'Throne of Glass' is well-suited to young adult readers with a penchant for the fantasy realm, and especially of interest to those with an interest in the gothic genre regardless of age.
Other books in the series include: 'Crown of Midnight', 'Heir of Fire', 'Queen of Shadows' and 'Empire of Storms'.
Sarah J. Maas' fantasy series is available at Dymocks in Australia and Waterstones in the U.K.
