MARVEL | 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' meets 'Avengers: Infinity War'

"It's show time, A-Holes."

The Guardians are back in this highly anticipated sequel to the 2014 blockbuster hit. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Groot (Vin Diesel) and Rocket (Bradley Cooper) return, becoming two-time galaxy savers.

The film begins with the Guardians meeting with the Sovereign People. Rocket in his true ‘I-don't-give-a-shit manner’ steals from them, resulting in the Sovereign people seeking revenge on the team of misfit heroes. While under attack, they are saved by a mysterious man named Ego (Kurt Russell) and his servant, Mantis (Pom Klementieff).

SPOILER ALERT!

Ego - who doesn't waste a moment in revealing who he is, tells the Guardians that he is Peter’s father - giving Peter the chance to find answers to his questions. But with an evil plan for world domination, Ego turns out to be the one thing the galaxy needs saving from. There are some added additions to the team this time around: Nebula (Karen Gillan), Yondu (Michael Rooker) and Mantis. So, with a newly formed team of Guardians, do they have what it takes to bring down Ego and save the galaxy? Writer-director James Gunn made magic happen in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’, but he made a risky move with the many character arcs and storylines being told at once. Amazingly, Gunn manages to pull it off and viewers aren’t left feeling like it was all too much.

Die hard Marvel viewers will realise a lot of the character arcs lead into ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ – Marvel’s upcoming third instalment of the ‘Avengers’ films, where we will see the Guardians joining forces with the Avengers. Because of this, there was a few stories needing to be told for the characters to move on to their next adventure.

The reconciliation between Nebula and Gamora - daughters of Thanos (who we know will play the supervillain of 'Avengers: Infinity War') plays an important part in the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe. They need to set aside their differences if they are going to have any chance at defeating their father. But for the viewers who don't closely follow the Marvel series, it was risky packing so much into one film.

The CGI in ‘Vol. 2’ is spectacular, and for children it’s mesmerising. The costumes, art and makeup are phenomenal and very pleasing throughout. Overall, this film is hard to fault. Some may note that it is childish at times - the constant use of the term “a-hole”, jokes about penises and talking about putting turd in someone’s bed has a bit of a teenage boy tone; this doesn’t repel viewers though, and remarkably, like every other element to these films, Gunn makes it work.

Viewers find the film humorous and entertaining, and ideally it is what sets ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ apart from other Marvel films. One could question though how the characters of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ will fit into the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe? With Thanos being the father of Gamora and Nebula, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ is arguably more directly connected with the Guardians than the Avengers.

So how will the two collide? Will we see an awkward mess, or will the new ‘Avengers’ film be all that we are hoping for? Can the humor and uniqueness Gunn brings to the universe be continued into the upcoming ‘Avengers’ installment? We will find out when ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ is released in theatres May 2018. But for now, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ is in cinemas worldwide now!
