LOWDOWN | Oz Comic-Con, Perth 2017

The Australian pop culture convention year began with a bang, with Oz Comic-Con holding their first expo of 2017 in Perth on 25th-26th March.

Fans from all walks of life – some even in costume - headed through the doors of the Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre, ready to catch some cool cosplay, buy some memorabilia, and meet their favourite celebrities from television, film and the video gaming industry.

Perth was treated to appearances by a number of famous face actors, including Arthur Darvill ('Doctor Who', 'Legends of Tomorrow'), Melissa Joan Hart ('Sabrina the Teenage Witch') and Brent Spiner ('Star Trek: The Next Generation').

Comic and publishing guests such as Isobelle Carmody (author of the 'Obernewtyn' series), Stewart McKenny and Nicola Scott were also on hand to sign books and artwork.

There were plenty of opportunities to meet some amazing cosplayers throughout the weekend. Internationally recognised cosplayer Ivy Doomkitty and Perth's own AstroKerrie gave panels on topics such as 'Body Positivity in Cosplay' and 'The Magic of Worbla: The Thermoplastic'.

Adelaide-based cosplayer Jusz acted as host for the Perth round of the Australian Championships of Cosplay, with the overall champion being crowned in Sydney in October, and representing Australia at the C2E2 Crown Championships of Cosplay in Chicago.

Other cosplay highlights included the Cosplay Parade, prop competition, and the Cosplay Central - featuring costume displays, cosplay photographers and a photography gallery.

And then there were the costumes worn by the general public... People went to a lot of effort to dress or look like their favourite characters, and it really paid off!

The slow floor itself had plenty to offer, from art to anime screenings, gaming to activities for the whole family.

To celebrate the release of 'Rogue One' on DVD/BluRay on 5th April, a wall of Death Trooper statues were lined up for photo opportunities.

To help everyone practice their Star-Lord dance moves in time for the release of 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' (in cinemas 25th April), the Marvel booth hosted a dance floor for patrons to show-off their skills.

'Star Wars' fans could visit the 501st Legion and meet Darth Vader and various Stormtroopers, as well as visit Wicket and some of his Ewok friends on the Forest Moon of Endor.

Gamers had the opportunity to play some of the newest and not-yet-released Nintendo Switch offerings, and over at the Anime Station, not only were anime episodes shown with the option of listening in either English or the original Japanese, but a PS4 and Wii were set up for 'J-Stars Victory VS' and 'Pokkén Tournament' battles. For those into non-electronic games, The Gaming Zone had board games 'Catan' and 'Pandemic' available to play.

Elsewhere on the floor, including in the artist alley, there were plenty to purchase from artists, authors, and vendors of pop culture clothing, jewellery, accessories, comics, plush toys, collectables and much more.

Suffice to say, it was an incredible weekend for all pop culture lovers here in Perth!

Oz Comic-Con now makes its way to Adelaide on 1-2 April, with shows in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney taking place later in the year.
