Gary Oldman leads an exceptional cast in witty historical drama 'Darkest Hour'

'Darkest Hour' follows Winston Churchill’s early days as Prime Minister, as Hitler is closing in on Britain during World War II. Churchill must decide whether to negotiate a peace treaty with Nazi Germany or continue the war.

This award season seems to be the year for Gary Oldman, with the actor sweeping up awards for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in 'Darkest Hour'. Before his nomination for 2011’s 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy', Oldman was considered one of the greatest actors never nominated for an Oscar. Now the character actor is a frontrunner to win the Academy Award for Best Actor for his brilliant portrayal of the famous British political figure.

Watching this, it is clear this is a performance film from start to finish. Oldman is flawless as he transforms into Churchill with outstanding makeup and prosthetics, capturing the Prime Minister's accent and mannerisms to a tee. He is a thrill to watch and delivers the best performance of his career so far, making him a worthy Oscar candidate.

An incredible supporting cast surrounds Oldman including Lily James ('Downton Abbey', 'Cinderella') and Kristin Scott Thomas ('Nowhere Boy', 'The Golden Compass'). Add to that Australian Ben Mendelsohn, who is impressive as King George IV, perfectly capturing the King’s stutter.

'Darkest Hour' is an enjoyable film despite its subject matter, directed by Joe Wright ('Pride and Prejudice', 'Atonement').

The screenplay by Anthony McCarten is well crafted, balancing the dramatic with a number of humorous moments throughout.

Superb cinematography by Bruno Delbonnel, and an excellent music score by Dario Marianelli. Add to that the beautiful costumes, makeup, and production designs which work towards making 'Darkest Hour' the magnificent film it set out to be.

'Darkest Hour' is an enjoyable drama full of wit and marvellous performances by the cast - led flawlessly by Gary Oldman.

'Darkest Hour' is in cinemas now!
