AT THE BOX OFFICE | 'Baywatch' (2017)
Matt Brody (Zac Efron) is a former Olympic swimmer who wants to join an elite team of lifeguards led by the buff Mitch Buchannon (Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson). Brody thinks he'll get in easily, but his casual attitude instantly rubs Mitch the wrong way. When drugs and a shady resort owner pose a threat to the bay, Mitch and Matt must put their differences aside to spring into action and save the day.
'Baywatch' had a lot to live up to. The television series starring huge nineties stars Pamela Anderson, David Hasselhoff and Carmen Electra, first airing in 1989 and running for a whopping 11 seasons had viewers tuning in each week to follow the dramas of the lifeguards both on the job and off.
Unfortunately, the 2017 'Baywatch' leaves viewers unsatisfied. If you are like me and wanting to see the film based upon the decent trailer, you may have been left disappointed. With only three or four scenes that provided quick laughs, the rest of the script left little room for quality humour.
The storyline was a mess, and tried to make the audience sympathise with characters that weren't wholly relatable. Zac Efron's character may have lost in the Olympics, but his cocky approach makes it difficult for viewers to sympathise. During party scenes, he is shown to really only care about himself, reinforcing his vain persona.
Not even bikini-clad girls and shirtless men could save this film from the scripted blunder that it was.
Ultimately, the only good thing going for 'Baywatch' is its entertaining trailer, a select few comedic scenes, and the cast who seemed to have good chemisty but were let down by bad writing.
Due to its poor Box Office performance, it is unlikely we'll see a 'Baywatch 2' any time soon.
But decide for yourself! 'Baywatch' is in cinemas now.
