ACTION/COMEDY | 'Baby Driver'

'Baby Driver' tells the story of a young getaway driver who finds himself taking part in a heist doomed to fail after being coerced into working for a crime boss.

The thing about Edgar Wright is that he's had such a great track record over the last decade or so with hits such as 'Shaun of the Dead', 'Hot Fuzz', and 'Scott Pilgrim vs The World', along with 'Ant-Man' writing credits; therefore, it's no surprise that his latest instalment feels like it's lacking.

There's so much hype around 'Baby Driver' right now, especially as it is a film that supposedly boasts a 'killer' soundtrack. Even with an amazing cast, the dialogue is a little too on-the-nose, the love story lacks the necessary chemistry to make it believable, and the characters are arguably underdeveloped.

Additionally, it seems the cast has nothing to connect with in their bland characters, as if they were stereotypes of what they could've been; this could stem from the fact that there are too many characters, and a big emphasis on the love story itself.

There's nothing new about the plot, and the film feels like it's nothing more than a music video stitched together. It is not hard to switch off during this film, although it tries hard reach peak action, as if competing compete with other action/comedy films such as '21 Jump Street', 'Kick-Ass', and 'Kingsman'.

Although there's no doubt that the film is fun, providing some laughs along the way, it feels nothing more than a shell of an action/comedy. With Wright's reputation and following, it is disappointing that 'Baby Driver' is average at best. It is not bad, but it could have - and should have - been so much better.

Stick to Wright's oldie's but goodies.

'Baby Driver' is in cinemas now.
