When Cruise became Seal... 'American Made' is a must-see biopic!
'American Made' sees Tom Cruise reunite with his 'Edge of Tomorrow' director, Doug Liman to bring the story of Barry Seal to the big screen.
Barry Seal (Cruise) is a pilot who lands work for the CIA, but becomes a drug smuggler for the 1980s Medellín Cartel. In order to avoid jail time, Seal approaches United States government officials, serving as an informant for the DEA.
'American Made' shows Cruise in his element, giving an overall satisfying performance. It was a perfect casting choice for the role of Seal, as Cruise brings charisma and humour to the part in a way only he could. A supporting cast of Domhnall Gleeson and Sarah Wright make this a solid film where casting is concerned.
Director Liman ('Edge of Tomorrow', 'The Bourne Identity') has arguably made an incredible, and at times, amusing biopic. He creates an entertaining look at the life of Barry Seal as a fun escapade, inevitably providing great entertainment for audiences with a penchant for good comedy dialogue.
Writer Gary Spinelli gives an impressive effort with his script, leaving the audience to forget at times that story is based on true events.
Cinematography by César Charlone is well-paced and finely shot, complemented by great editing by Saar Klein, Andrew Mondshein, and Dylan Tichenor.
The production design and costumes of the film are superb and detailed throughout - perfectly suited to the period in which this film is set.
Overall, 'American Made' is an unconventional biopic that’s both pleasant and a surprisingly fascinating film to watch. The casting is excellent, the direction superb, and the story is intriguing.
Definitely worth a watch!
