'Idol Incidents' Episode Two Review

Second Episode brings Sanrai-Tou to Pollution...

The second episode of ‘Idol Jihen’ (‘Idol Incidents’) continues in the same tone of last week’s light-hearted episode, pleasing viewers once more.

Script wise, this week’s story is far from revolutionary, taking serious issues and adapting them into a light-hearted scenario. This is not to say, that the Mages have not done great job. The company has done well to give a new look to the genre of idol anime. However, at the same time it does make one wonder if they will aim to take political issues more seriously in future episodes. Or choose to prevent the bad guys from being as easily swayed by the Idol Dietwomen during their singing performances, as has been the case in recent episodes.

Performance wise, the voice acting remains in top form, though the character of Sanae (voiced by Reina Ueda from ‘Bakuon’) still lacks depth; however, but this is more an issue of script than actor. It is arguably understandable that Sanae is a wise character, but with the script as it is at present, her characterisation remains very shallow.

The Idols’ songs are sweet and bubbly as would be expected, though they do not seem to be very memorable tracks. Perhaps this is something the creators can consider moving forward.

SPOILER ALERT!

Natsuki is getting used to the political agenda that needs to become a priority if she is to be a true Idol Dietwoman – a representative of the people. Naturally, her ambitious and energetic nature, make studying difficult, but her enthusiasm more than makes up for it.

As members of the Heroine Party, they are looking into local issues, and this week’s issue is that of pollution in a small town. Natsuki, Shizuka and Sanae head out to check the situation to discover the Sanrai-Tou (a playful pun on Sunlight) Party protesting the dumping of garbage in the local park.

Sanrai-Tou member Chinatsu Ryuusekidou approaches the businessman who approved the dumping, only to have him argue that there is nothing illegal in what he is doing. Natsuki then introduces herself to the Sanrai-Tou Party, but is met with a hostile air, with Chinatsu calling Shizuka a traitor.

Much of the episode revolves around Natsuki finding out more of Shizuka’s past, and her willing acceptance of a challenge from Chinatsu - if she can help sort out the garbage problem. What ensues is a hilarious bungee jumping challenge that Natsuki (literally) jumps into.

At the completion of the challenge, the Parties team up and resolve the pollution problem of the village where Chinatsu grew up as a small girl.

Interestingly, a short scene at the episode’s conclusion shows a powerful businessman who appears to be conspire against the Idol Dietwomen.

What could be his ploy?

All in all, this show is promising to be the fun, light-hearted show fans anticipated it would be.
