'Bridget Jones' Baby' Film Review

'Bridget Jones' Baby' tells the story of Bridget's focus on the single life and her career… until it is interrupted when she finds herself pregnant. And there’s a hitch… she is only fifty percent sure of the baby daddy’s identity. As the third instalment in the series, there's only so much the writers can do now with a character like Bridget Jones. It is especially tricky when only two of the leads from the previous films return to reprise their roles.

Renee Zellweger returns as everyone’s favourite onscreen faux pax, worried no longer about the granny panties but rather the maternity wardrobe. Everyone’s favourite Colin Firth graces our screens yet again as the irreplaceable (yet highly fastidious) Mark.

While the film lacks the creativity and humour of the first film, there have been worse follow ups to popular film franchises. Despite its heavy-handed cliches and back story, it's a harmlessly entertaining film that allows its viewers to switch off.

Ed Sheeran makes a cameo appearance, adding a small dose of musical distraction - though this arguably dates the film.

The film is typical in the way it humours its audience, though it lacks genuine romance, which is often needed in the genre; however, but one might argue that the 'Bridget Jones' script leaves little opportunity for such due to its focus on the eponymous character’s development throughout the series.

The film’s simplicity may remind us of the slew of predictable romantic comedies of the 90s to mid-2000s, while not exceptional, is an easy-watch nonetheless.

Although the title leaves little to the imagination, ‘Bridget Jones’ Baby’ still holds its own with a strong cast, as is expected of this franchise. While an improvement on the series’ prequel, 'Bridget Jones' Baby' possesses enough charm and charisma to provide an entertaining film that will capture the hearts of fans old and new.

It is good to have some British 'romance' back on our screens - and Zellweger, who has been absent for too long. 'Bridget Jones' Baby' is available on Blu-Ray and DVD on December 14th 2016 via JB Hi Fi in Australia, and January 2nd 2017 via HMV in the U.K.
